MUMBAI, January 31: Gurudas Kamat was nearly arrested in the middle of his campaign launch here this evening. Inspector Sonawane of the Kherwadi police station today summoned him in the middle of a speech by Chhagan Bhujbal to tell him he was under orders to immediately arrest Kamat for alleged violation of the electoral code of conduct. Apparently, some supporters were playing a banjo when he was filing his nomination papers on Thursday. An enraged Kamat immediately appealed to the gathering and challenged the state government to misuse its authority by arresting everyone.

"They have not arrested Pramod Mahjan and Ram Naik for similar musical accompaniments. Moreover, there is a clear case of violation of the code against Mahajan and the police apparently cannot locate him just because his brother-in-law (Gopinath Munde) is the Home Minister," Kamat said.

Inspector Sonawane left after sensing the ugly mood of the crowd. Kamat has threatened to launch a complaint with the Election Commission about themisuse of authority by the Sena-BJP alliance.
