The Supreme Court on Monday exempted Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati and the junior pontiff from personal appearance in the Sankararaman murder trial in the Chengalpattu court while asking it not to frame charges till October 4.
A bench of CJI R.C. Lahoti and Justices G.P. Mathur and P.K. Balasubramanyan passed the directives on the seer’s petition seeking transfer of the trial alleging that the TN government was persecuting him. Appearing for the seer, senior advocate Fali Nariman said the trial court’s decision of fixing September 5 for framing of charges hit at the religion of the accused as for the past 2,500 years, the two seers were always present at Tirupati for the Chaturmasya Brat.
