
CHANDIGARH, April 19: Kanpur Area bagged the overall championship with 98 points in the Indian Air Force Inter-Zone Maintenance Command athletic meet which concluded at Sector 7 Sports Complex here today. Delhi Area secured 42 points to win the second position while Nagpur with 33 points were third and Deolali got the fourth place with 31 points.
Anil Kumar and BK Mishra were declared the best athletes of the meet in which more than 200 athletes took part.
Anil Kumar of Kanpur, who was capped with the best athlete award, also became the fastest runner of the meet by winning gold medal in the 100 metres dash. It was start to finish affair for Anil, who beat the gun on one occasion.The eventual winner glided effortlessly to breast the tape in 11.70 seconds while Santosh of Delhi struggled to win the second position in 11.91. R Murugan of Kanpur took the third spot with 12.32.
Anil also anchored his team in the 4 X 400 metres realy gold. The other members of the victorious team, who clocked 3:53.90 seconds, were AC Thomas, Vinod Kumar Mishra and Girish Kumar Mishra. Delhi team, who threatened to overpower formidable Kanpur in the second leg, finally managed to win the second with a time of 3:57.25 while Nagpur were distant third in 4:24.53.
Anil Kumar won the third gold of the day in the 400 metres with a time of 58.46 followed closely by his team mate GK Mishra in 58.88. BS Bhardwaj of Nagpur finished third in 1:05.44.
Earlier, in the morning session, Jasbir Singh of Delhi won the gruelling 3,000 metres steeplechase in 10:30.00. Jasbir also won gold medal in 5,000 and 10,000 metres events. More than a minute beind the winner PK Kadyan of Deolali finished second with a time of 11:41.63 and BS Rathi was third in 12:06.00.
Kanpur’s VK Mishra sailed over the hurdles to win the gold in the 110 metres hurdles. He clocked 21.01 for the distance. GK Mishra (Kanpur), who won second spot in the one lap race took the silver medal in 21.82 while bronze went to JP Lal Dash of Deolali in 23.86.
Hariram of Deolali with a leap of 5.42 metres took the first position in the long jump event.R Murugan (Kanpur) and AC Mohanty (Nagpur) were second and third respectively with a jump of 5.18 adm 4.94 metres.
Javelin throw gold went to BK Jha of Kanpur with a throw of 45.08 metres. Godwin of Nagpur got the silver with a distance of 39.10 while Choudhary of Kanpur took the bronze in 35.70.
At the closing ceremony, Air Devil team performed free fall which enthralled the spectators.
