
PATIALA, JAN 31: Punjab Finance and Planning Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh today called upon intelligentsia and writers to give a new direction to society to remove poverty. While presiding over a function of Punjabi Sahit Sabha here at Bhasha Bhawan, he said that the society needed a policy for plugging the gap between the rich and poor classes to eradicate poverty. He cautioned if today we failed to read the writing on the wall, one day the people living below the poverty-line might unite and revolt to change the present system of society. He alleged that some persons sitting in high offices were involved in amassing money to remove their own poverty instead of removing the poverty of the people.
The minister said that the intelligentsia and politics had a close relation with each other. He said, “The intelligenstia provides guidelines to show way for the development of the society while the politicians adopt that way to achieve the targets.”
On this occasion, Capt Kanwaljit Singh released two books – Merian Chonwian Kahanian written by Jagdish Armani and Uttam Katha – written by Dr Joginder Singh Nirala. He also honoured Pritam Singh Panchhi. Dr Jaswinder Singh, Ramnath Shukla, Karamveer Singh and Satinder Nanda for their valuable contributions in different fields of Punjabi literature.While speaking on the occasion, Jasdev Singh Sandhu, chairman of Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board exhorted the writers and intelligentsia to write in such a way that could help in improving the present condition of the society by removing the existing social evils. He said that both these sections of the society had a potential to give a new direction to the society.In his address, Jaswant Singh Kanwal, novelist, appealed to the government to come up to help the writers to improve their plight. He also appealed to the government to implement the laws strictly to curb corruption to improve the financial health of the society.
Dr Joginder Singh Nirala and Dr Amarjit Singh Kaunkain also read their papers. A Mini Kahani’ competition was also organised on this occasion in which Navdeep Lemedy got first and Sat Paul Khullar second position.
