SRINAGAR, Aug 6: Dr Karan Singh has resigned as the chairman of the committee for autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir on “personal reasons”, an official spokesman said today.

The State government has appointed the Works Minister, Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah, as the working chairman of the committee after accepting Dr Singh’s resignation, the spokesman said.

The committee was constituted by Dr Farooq Abdullah soon after assuming the office of the Chief Minister in October last year to look into the autonomy of the State. The spokesman said Dr Singh’s resignation would not affect the preparation of the committee’s report expected by the end of the year.

The State government, he said, intends to adhere to the schedule of making a presentation of its demands to the Centre before the end of the current year.Mirza Abdul Rashid, a former speaker of the State assembly, has been nominated to the committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dr Singh, the spokesman said.
