NEW DELHI, Jan 31: Special Director, Special Investigation Team (SIT) D R Karthikeyan has taken “current charge” as director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to official sources, the Prime Minister’s Office cleared the orders this afternoon and Karthikeyan took charge from R C Sharma. He will be CBI Director until April, when his extension in service comes to an end.

Karthikeyan, a 1964 batch Tamil Nadu cadre Indian Police Service officer, currently also holds the charge of Central Reserve Police Force’s Special Director-General. It is, however, not clear whether he has been divested of the post with his new appointment as CBI Director.

Karthikeyan was due to retire in October last year. But the government gave him a six-month extension and initiated a move to make him an Officer on Special Duty in the CBI’s Special Investigation Team.
