It was Chief Minister A.K. Antony’s rally but former rival and now friend K. Karunakaran was the star of its inauguration, parading their newfound unity to ensure the party does not ‘‘lose even a single vote’’. Karunakaran launched the Navothana Yatra in the presence of an array of UDF leaders, including ministers, by presenting a shawl to Antony. ‘‘We should not lose even a single vote,’’ Karunakaran told the crowd that gathered at the yatra launch, underlining the real intention of the yatra. He said the reactionary forces were hatching a conspiracy to break the unity of the UDF but the voters would teach them a bitter lesson on May 10. ‘‘When Antony and Karunakaran are united, they will not succeed in their game, whatever propaganda they unleashed in the process,’’ he said. Karunakaran said he had come for Antony’s yatra though he was ailing. ‘‘If I did not come I would be misunderstood,’’ said a visibly tired Karunakaran. ‘‘We will go forward united in the coming days and nobody can wreck our unity,’’ he said in a frail voice.
‘‘We had started the GIM but the CPI(M) had unleashed its disruptive forces against all progressive and development activities we had initiated,’’ Antony said.
