DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will undertake a fast on Monday demanding early completion of the Sethusamudram project, DMK sources said.
A decision in this regard was taken after Karunanidhi consulted other leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance following the Supreme Court order today, staying the bandh called by the DMK-led DPA tomorrow or any other day on the Sethusamudram issue.
The fast will be observed in front of his MLA’s office in Chepauk from 8 am to 6 pm, the sources said, adding other leaders of the alliance would also join it.
After three hours of arguments on a petition filed by AIADMK, a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice B N Aggarwal stayed the bandh called tomorrow or on any other day.
The Court had especially met today, a rare occurrence, to dispose of the AIADMK’s petition.
The AIADMK filed the SLP, after the Madras High Court yesterday declined to interfere with the party’s plea for restraining the ruling combine from going ahead with the bandh call.
The AIADMK in the SLP had contended that the proposed bandh was unconstitutional and violative of the apex court’s directive on the issue.
