Tottenham Hotspur kept in touch at the top of the English Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, while Charlton Athletic beat Middlesbrough 1-0 to record their first home win of the season.

Spurs were indebted to two second-half goals by Ireland striker Robbie Keane and a late Simon Davies volley against Bolton, who had equalised through Youri Djorkaeff.

Striker Jason Euell secured Charlton’s win over Middlesbrough with a fifth-minute header, a lead the London team bravely protected to climb from bottom to 15th place in the table.

Liverpool, who won 1-0 at Leeds United on Saturday, head the standings with 24 points from 10 games, followed by Arsenal on 23 and Spurs — who pushed Manchester United down to fourth — on 19. Middlesbrough slipped to fifth.

Charlton’s win on Sunday and defeat for Bolton — their sixth of the campaign — left Sam Allardyce’s team bottom of the table. Spurs endured a frustrating first half at White Hart Lane before making their dominance count.

Aston Villa entertain Southampton in Monday’s Premier League match.
