MUMBAI, June 8: Karnataka tennis player Shivshankar, who tore a cartilage in his leg while playing in the team events in the National Games, will undergo arthroscopic surgery at Hosmat, a reputed hospital for treatment of sports injuries. Well-known orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr Thomas Chandy will perform the operation. The cost of the operation will be borne by the medical committee of the National Games Organising Committee. “If there is any shortfall, it will be written off by the hospital,” Chandy said.
Way to go
Willingly or unwillingly, several scribes have been taken on a `tour’ of Bangalore by unscrupulous auto-drivers, with the result that the vulnerable have to shell out a few extra rupees. However, on way to the Koramangala Games Village this morning, a scribe had a pleasant experience. After realising that the driver was taking him for a ride, he asked a policeman to help him out. The cop not only gave the right directions, but also scolded the driver. There was a piece of advice too: “Don’t pay more than Rs 20.”
Identity switch
TWO enterprising participants in the National Games tried to befuddle the smart City Police but their trick did not work with the guardians of law. J.Y. Kowli from Mumbai and Zaria from Andhra Pradesh had a drink or two too much and picked up a fight with the staff of a City bar on Thursday night. When they were handed over to the police, Kowli and Zaria claimed they were boxers from Mizoram and had been attacked by goons. Mercifully, the cops did not believe their story.
