While terming the Dalai Lama a “stooge of imperialist powers doing dirty work for America” and alleging that the Tibetan protests over the Olympic torch relay in New Delhi were sponsored by “imperialist interests”, Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member V S Achuthanandan presided over an event in Thiruvananthapuram to vow solidarity with the Beijing Olympics. At the function, organised by the state Sports Council, VS went on to assert that no such protests and propaganda would stop China from making the Olympics a great event and claimed that the world condemned the Tibetan protests. Among those who took a public oath at the function claiming to endorse the state’s support to the Beijing Olympics were state ministers M A Baby, K P Rajendran and A K Balan, and a host of other Left leaders.
