JULY 15: Ketan Khaire of Pune and Pallavi Shah of Kolhapur became the joint leaders with 5.5 points apiece as the Maharashtra State Selection Chess Tournament at the Andheri Sports Complex today wound its way past the sixth round today.

Khaire defeated overnight sole leader Shashikant Kutwal in 22 moves. Kutwal, playing black, opted for the Sicilian Najdorf variation, captured a pawn on e4 but allowed Khaire to attack. It developed into complications and Kutwal realised that he would lose his queen to save himself from checkmate and resigned on the 22nd move.

Pallavi crushed Mumbai’s Sharath Gokul in 34 moves. She sacrificed two minor pieces for Gokul’s rook and a pawn. This brought the King into the open play and rest was easy.

In second spot with five points each were Kutwal of Pune, Deepak Andurkar, P G Date, Ramakrishna Kashelkar and Pankaj Joshi of Nagpur.

Bandra packers win

Bandra Packers trounced Bharat Petroleum 5-0 in the Mumbai District Football Association-organised Harwood League match at the St. Xavier’s ground, parel today.

After two matches, Bandra Packers have four points with one win and a draw. BPCL were condemned to their third defeat in four matches after having drawn an earlier tie.

Ranzie Kallicharan opened the scoring for Bandra Packers with a goal after 31 minutes. Blaze Vessaoker (55th), Girish Desai (59th), Pascal Koli (69th) and Altaf Mansari (75th) rounding off the tally.

Agrawal, Balsara Shine

PJ Hindu Gymkhana overcame Santacruz Gymkhana with the help of some wonderful play by Arun Agrawal in the Mumbai Billiards League for the week ending Sunday for the Mathurdas Vissanji Challenge Trophy. Agrawal scored the highest break of 135. The other century maker of the week was Omar Balsara, who notched a unfinished 102 for Bombay Gymkhana B, who, however, lost to Khar Gymkhana.

Nalin Patel (99) and Ashok Shandilya (94), were among the other top players who came up with good breaks for their teams, Bombay Gymkhana `A’ and Central Railway Matunga Institute.
