NEW DELHI, NOV 9: Senior Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Mohammad Aslam Khan today joined hands with rebel Jitendra Prasada, accusing the party high command of large-scale bungling in the list of PCC delegates, especially in his state.
Khan, once close to former UPCC chief Salman Khursheed, told reporters today that he took this decision after discovering that the entire list of PCC delegates in his state was manipulated by the pradesh returning officer (PRO) Birendra Singh in league with the coterie surrounding party chief Sonia Gandhi. He has himself resigned as a PCC delegate in protest.
“There was no election (of PCC delegates) in UP… most of the list was made overnight by the PRO ignoring the active members enrolment list and without even waiting for the reports of as many as 26 district returning officers,” he alleged.
Khan, a former state minister, asserted that at places persons who were not even party’s primary members found themselves on the PCC delegates’ list while those who had genuinely worked in the membership drive were simply ignored.
Calling for a review of the entire PCC list in UP, Khan questioned the need for holding an election if all this manipulation had to be done. “Simple nomination would have been better,” he said.
Meanwhile, taking a cue from CWC, various PCC units and party chief ministers, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) today unanimously approved a resolution supporting Sonia’s candidature in the presidential election of the party on November 12.
Moving the resolution, which was passed by a voice vote at an emergency meeting IYC president Randeep Singh Surjewala said it was ironical that Sonia was facing a challenge from Prasada who had himself urged her to take the mantle of the party two years back.
Reminding the partymen of tragic events in Sonia’s personal life, Surjewala urged all PCC delegates to strengthen the party by whole-heartedly backing her candidacy. “Only the Congress under the dynamic leadership of Sonia Gandhi is playing the role of a responsible Opposition party,” he said, adding that the IYC was fully geared to fight the communal forces represented by Bajrang Dal, RSS, and VHP under her leadership.
“Persons challenging Sonia Gandhi seem to be backed more by elements outside the party, known for their pathological hatred to the Congress in general and the Nehru-Gandhi family in particular,” he felt.
He asserted that the Nehru-Gandhi family had played a vital role during the freedom movement and later in reconstruction of a modern, self-reliant and secular India.
