CHANDIGARH, January 13: B Khurana claimed the handicap billiards title in the YMCA open billiards and snooker championship at YMCA Hall, Sector 11 here today. In a fast-paced match Khurana maintained pressure to defeat Deepak Sehgal 348-309 and win the trophy.

Earlier, in the semifinal B Khurana beat R C Sharma in a close contest 315-270.

In open billiards Anil Sharma got the better of Kakar 350-246 to enter the semifinal stage. The other semifinalists in the fray are Rakesh Gupta, Manjit Singh and Deepak Goel.

Though Kakar got the initial lead with his touch game he was unable to keep up the tempo.

On the other hand Anil hit breaks of 43, 25, 23 points in quick succession to wrap the contest.

Rakesh Gupta outplayed Manav 47-33, 46-50, 59-45, 49-32 to win the semifinal league match of the snooker event.

It was Rakesh’s experience which enabled him to prevail over his younger opponent to assert his supremacy for the title. After winning the first frame Rakesh lost his concentration and the frame. But thereafter, he made no mistake in potting and went on to win the match.

However, it will be a tough outing for Rakesh in the next two semifinal league matches. As he will be facing experienced Haryana players — Anil Sharma and Deepak Goel.

Anil is state billiards champion while Deepak is an excellent snooker player.

Tomorrow the league matches would begin at 10.00 a.m.
