16-year-old accused was returning from party with friends: police
The Northwest district police on Saturday arrested a minor, who they said was driving the Scorpio that hit a Maruti car near the Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station on Thursday night, leaving its five occupants dead. The accident took place just after midnight Thursday.
The 16-year-old arrested is son of Rohini businessman Brahm Prakash, who owns the Scorpio, the police said. The police had earlier detained Prakash and were questioning him. According to the police, the teenager was driving the Scorpio at a high speed when the collision took place. He was returning from a party with four other friends, a police officer said.
Newsline had reported on Saturday that Mohammed Alam, an auto-rickshaw driver waiting at the traffic light to let the speeding Scorpio pass, saw the SUV hurtling in at over 100 kilometres per hour and hit the Maruti car at the intersection.
Rakesh Garg (48), wife Uma Garg (43), their sons Mukul (18) and Radhe (10), and niece Tanvi (18) died in the incident. The witness, Alam, had said he and the few others at the spot at the time had got busy looking after the victims and could not see where the occupants of the Scorpio (registration number DL8CJ5582) fled. According to police officials, Prakash had reportedly given his Scorpio to a relative based in Uttam Nagar four days ago.
The Gargs were returning home, in Tri Nagar, after attending a wedding in Alipur when the incident occurred around 12.40 am. Police officials who inspected the spot said the victims were thrown out of the car due to the impact. Uma Garg and Tanvi died on the spot, while Rakesh Garg and his sons succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Garg owned a cosmetics shop and was also a real estate agent.
