The unravelling of the Kiliroor sex abuse case is giving sleepless nights to many Congress leaders in the district despite the death of the victim, Saari S.Nair.

Two local leaders and a police constable, who is their friend, have already been questioned by the Special Investigation Team headed by DIG Srilekha at the Kottayam Police Club. One of them is a retired KSRTC employee and a close relative of Praveen, a KSRTC conductor and an accused in the case.

These Congress leaders, with the help of the constable, had escorted Praveen out safely during the dispute with the BJP leader, Devadas, over the agreement on Praveen marrying Saari. Devadas was arrested the other day.

Sources told Express that they are still under the surveillance of the SIT.

Some top Congress leaders, who frequented the posh resort here where Saari had allegedly been sexually exploited, are also under the team’s observation. They might not be able to escape the law as the SIT has got the call details of Saari’s mobile phone, sources said.

An ashramam at Chennithala near Mavelikara, where prime accused in the case Latha Nair used to visit, is also being watched by the SIT. A camp to be held by the ashramam was abruptly cancelled without assigning any reason soon after Latha Nair’s arrest. It is suspected that Latha Nair and the gang had driven Latha Kurup of Karuvatta near Haripad and her daughter Rakhi to suicide. The veins on their hands were found cut and poison was traced in their body during autopsy.

Their neigbours say that a woman resembling Latha Nair used to visit the family along with a few others in sleek cars. Latha Kurup had not disclosed anything about the woman and the others to her neighbours other than that they were from Tiruvalla.
