Carding a final round four-under-par 66, twenty five-year-old Delhi golfer Ashok Kumar walked away with the winner’s cheque of Rs11.34 lakhs in the richest prize money tournament in the PGTI calendar at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club course in Chembur on a hot Sunday afternoon.
In the process, Ashok smashed the course record of 14 under par by five strokes to measure up to his pre-tournament target of 20 under par, and jack up his earnings to over Rs 38.5 lakhs so far this season.
“I’ve been playing good golf week after week, so I was very confident about my chances. This is my fifth consecutive title from the last seven tournaments that I’ve played in the last two months,” stated the modest golfer who finished with an impressive card of 19-under-par 261.Seeing the form Ashok was in, pre-tournament favourite Shiv Kapur, who pulled out after the opening day with a bad back, could have done little to stop his fellow Delhi-mate from rolling out another emphatic win.
“It looks like the BPGC course is lucky for me. I’ve made a lot of birdies and eagles whenever I’ve play on it,” pointed out Ashok while receiving his trophy and winner’s cheque and he did not forget to mention that the course had been really worked into great shape this time.
“Gagan did very well,” said Ashok commending the stand out performance from the 19-year-old Kapurthala golfer, who shot a five-under-par, 65 on the final day and took second place, earning his highest pay cheque in his fledgling professional career for Rs 7.84 lakhs.
Ganganjeet, himself admitted that he was feeling great after his splendid showing. “I holed many putts today, but the 20-foot one was definitely the best,” added Bhullar, who along with Ashok next move on to match strokes on the greens in Gurgaon at the upcoming DLF Masters next week.
Shamim Khan followed the leaders with a one-under to finish third at six-under, 274, while Uttam Singh Mundy and Vijay Kumar finished tied fourth at three-under, 277.
