CAPE TOWN, FEB 12: Two new Test captains — both left-handed opening batsmen — will lead their teams on to the field when South Africa and Pakistan meet in the first of a three-Test series at the Wanderers in Johannesburg tomorrow.

Gary Kirsten and Aamir Sohail have both been called up at short notice after injuries to long-serving South African captain Hansie Cronje and Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif, appointed just weeks ago for this tour.

Brian McMillan with a strained tendon in his left foot is a late withdrawal.

Allan Donald, fit again after missing the last Test in Adelaide a mere nine days ago with a strained left hip, is back to lead the attack.

For Rashid, however, bitter disappointment was the only emotion after taking over the captaincy replacing Wasim Akram, who did not even make the final tour party.

Waqar Younis will now lead a three-man seam attack including all rounder Azhar Mahmood and Mohammad Akram.

Teams

South Africa: Gary Kirsten (captain), Adam Bacher, JacquesKallis, Daryll Cullinan, Andrew Hudson, Herschelle Gibbs, Shaun Pollock, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Pat Symcox, Allan Donald.
