Chief Minister S.M. Krishna on Saturday ordered a Corps of Detectives (CoD) probe into the alleged sexual harassment of girl students who had participated in an NSS camp in Nagarahole National Park recently.
A release from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat stated that Krishna had directed the CoD probe into the incident in which where the NSS State Coordinator and a Deputy Conservator of Forest had allegedly misbehaved with girl participants of the II state-level Inter-University Directorate NSS camp in Nagarahole forests.
The NSS camp, held between December 31, 2002 and January 7, 2003, was attended by 140 students, including 40 girls from various polytechnic colleges. Some of them were taken for night safaris, trekking and boating by the accused. On January 7, the students staged a protest against the harassment meted out to some of the girls.
Following media reports over the incident, Minister of State for Sports and Youth Services S.S. Mallikarjun directed the Youth Affairs Commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the episode and submit a report.
Meanwhile, women’s organisation Vimochana urged the government to dismiss the two officials involved in the scandal on the basis of the complaints and circumstantial evidence.
