Taking a pro-active stand against piracy, Lata Mangeshkar said she has decided to take up the issue with Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, since it is threatening the future of the Indian music industry.

She was speaking at the release of HMV Saregama’s Dnyaneshwar Mauli, a Marathi VCD comprising Sant Dnyaneshwar’s bhajans sung by her, on Tuesday.

The music for Lata’s first Marathi album has been given by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. On their stand against piracy, HMV MD A. Mitra said: ‘‘While the details have to be worked out, with Lataji’s support, we hope to bring this grave economic offence to the notice of the highest offices.’’

Elaborating on the idea behind the VCD, Lata said: ‘‘These days, people like to see, as well as listen. Instead of the remixes of evergreen numbers, why not something like this, which will bring Sant Dnyaneshwar’s poetry to the forefront, and into the lives of the present generation?’’
