KANPUR, APRIL 2: Uttar Pradesh, chasing 311 runs for an outright win, were 38 without loss after Hyderabad gambled by declaring their innings at 381 for five with Venkata Sai Laxman hitting an unbeaten 177 (241b, 370m, 16×4, 3×6) on the fourth day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final match here on Sunday.

Openers Mohd Saif (batting 16) and Jyoti Yadav (batting 18) were carrying the UP’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the second time in three years in the National cricket championship.

Earlier, Laxman had the distinction of scoring a century in both innings following his 128 in the first innings, with Nanda Kishore (93: 206b, 291m, 11×4) and D Vinay Kumar (48) also chipping in with useful contributions to help Hyderabad go for an early declaration.

Laxman put up two century partnerships – 180 runs with Nanda Kishore for the second wicket, and 109 with Vinay Kumar for the fourth — as Hyderabad hammered 311 runs in five hours.
