Learning intricacies of Kathak

CHANDIGARH, Oct 30: The students sat wide-eyed, learning the intricacies of Kathak from Prerna Shrimali and for them it was one of those rare chances as they had a close interaction with her. In simple words and through extempore movements, Prerna could instil interest and knowledge into the students.

That is the advantage of lec-dem series conducted by SPICMACAY and the second in this year’s series was held at two venues today. The morning session was at the GCG Sector 42 and in the evening, Prerna enlightened the students at the Dev Samaj College of Education. Prerna told them the basic differences between the two main gharanas of Kathak, Jaipur and Lucknow.

"In Lucknow gharana, we get to see more of shringar ras for the dance used to be performed by women in courts whereas in Jaipur, it is more of vigour as it is dominated by men and you can see the Rajput energy and a dominating bhakti ras."She informed them that Kathak was all about speed and freedom of movement for the dancer. It was an evening well spent for the students and the SPICMACAY needs all the accolades for helping the classical forms reach out to the young generation.
