The Left Front will bring an unofficial motion in the Assembly on Thursday, condemning the proposed civil nuclear deal between India and the US. A similar resolution was passed in the Kerala Assembly recently. The move in the West Bengal Assembly triggered a protest from the opposition Congress and Trinamool who staged a walkout after Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim made the announcement on Wednesday. Both the opposition parties declared they would boycott the debate.

The reaction came from party chief Mamata Banerjee herself. “The debate is being imposed on our members. We are not bonded labourers of either the Central or the State Government,” she said. Congress Legislature Party leader Manas Bhuinya said, “Our party would boycott the discussion because in our opinion there should not be any discussion on the issue before the Lok Sabha debates it on July 22.”
