Let’s be human

.

I belong to Assam and like all Assamese people, I take pride in that. I take pride in our sensibility, our patience, tolerance. Each time a life was lost in any part of India in a communal riot or a terrorist attack, we have wept. But the recent killings of innocent Biharis in Assam have put a question mark on our beliefs. We find it difficult to believe that some of our people have turned cowards, who consider the killing of innocent people as the solution to the problem. Let’s understand that it is important to go to the root of problems, analyse the facts and reasons and find a genuine solution.

I want to appeal to all my Assamese and Bihari comrades not to fall prey to the opportunism of a section of the people. We all know what is happening is not right and we should be bold enough to say so. Let’s retain our civility, and not hark back to barbarism. Let’s retain our humanity. This is an Assamese speaking for the Assamese and for the Bihari. A human being speaking for human beings.

Telgi’s guilty

Apropos of T.V.R. Shenoy’s ‘A village called Telgi’ (IE, November 20), why have police officers alone been targeted in the Telgi scam? Can they help a man swindle such a huge sum of money without the help of politicians? Yatha raja thatha praja, goes the saying. Unless politicians involved in the scam are punished severely, such scams will keep repeating themselves.

Karim Lala’s tentacles are spread over many states. But why are Maharashtra and Karnataka refusing a CBI investigation? This points to a larger guilt. It is a federal crime which has serious economic implications.
Vinod Kumar, On e-mail

Why is the Telgi matter not getting enough public attention? Why isn’t there a political/public uproar? The politicians who make the most noise over non-issues are not using this as a weapon in the electoral battle. Does it mean that everyone has a share in the scam? Doesn’t the Center have enough powers to order a probe? Can’t the courts order a probe by the federal agency? How long must we wait? Till all the culprits flee the country or die of old age?

Stop Modi

Isn’t there any way by which Indian democracy can book Narendra Modi on the charge of playing divisive politics? Why can’t such an innovative polity as ours find a law to stop the divisive pronouncements coming from Modi?

Double standards

This refers to ‘Cricket’s new smear: cash for India cap?’ (IE, November 21). Abhijit Kale has been banned from playing any matches till the inquiry is over. Since the selectors are also involved, does the BCCI have the courage to dissolve the selection committee till the inquiry is over?

Mirror, mirror

After all the dilly-dallying, the response of the Congress changed from “no-she-didn’t” to “yes-she-did” use the plane. Truth delayed is truth belittled. The Election Commission’s notice made the ‘strong’ party break out in sweat. The Congress must remember before pointing a finger at others (BJP et al), that many more fingers point towards itself.
