Rahulspeak

THIS is with reference to your editorial, ‘Reading his lips’ (IE, April 17). Rahul Gandhi, with his ill-informed utterances, is proving to be the enfant terrible of the Congress Party, besides becoming an unwelcome bull in the china shop of Indian diplomacy. He may be unstoppable because he is an heir to the ‘dynasty’, but his party colleagues must not forget that if they do not correct him now, he may end up writing an epitaph for the Congress. They have a duty to themselves and the country to ensure that there is some semblance of an informed discourse emerging from public platforms, particularly during election time. They must not blindly defend positions that are untenable and display a lack of discrimination when it comes to Rahul Gandhi. Otherwise they, too, will lose their credibility and standing. The Congress needs to remember how its stalwarts like V.N. Gadgil used to handle — with such tact and gentle humour — delicate matters of national interest.

APROPOS of the report, ‘Rahul does it again: This time, draws fire for saying my family ensured division of Pakistan’ (IE, April 16), Rahul Gandhi should be reminded that between his family and the division of Pakistan stood a man called Sam Maneckshaw. In any case, instead of dividing Pakistan, perhaps it would have been better if his family had united J&K.

THIS is in reference to Muzamil Jaleel’s story, ‘Hold Fire’ (IE, April15), the number of militants was haphazardly put together. Ideally, the report should have indicated militants per district or per tehsil, but that was not done. Furthermore, there was no indication about militant presence in the entire Shopian district. Someone with even basic knowledge about Kashmir will tell you that Shopian is one of the hotbeds of militancy. Also names were repeated in the list of militants for Pulwama and Awantipora. True, Awantipora is a part of Pulwama district, but then why list it separately in the first place?

American tragedy

THE shooting on the campus of Virginia Tech (‘At least 31 killed…’, IE, April 17) was shocking. The Columbine massacre saw two teenage students going on a rampage. That massacre had provoked great debate within mainstream American society on the nature of child upbringing in the country. If there is one thing the Viginia Tech attack must do, it must push America into reconsidering its weak gun control regime.
