Elected to power for the third consecutive time in Tripura, the Left Front on Tuesday held a massive victory rally, with over 10,000 members and supporters jostling for space at the Astabal Grounds in Agartala.

Flanked by CPI(M) MP Sitaram Yechury and the West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar asked party cadres not to get swayed by the thumping victory. In a hint at the sporadic post-poll violence in the state over the past few days, he warned that the police would go to any extent to maintain law and order.

“It is not just the Left Front’s victory. It is a fact that supporters and well-wishers of the Front have voted for us in large numbers, but once our government has taken oath, it belongs to the entire 35 lakh people of the state,” said Sarkar.

Urging partymen to stop using loudspeakers and bursting crackers to celebrate the win, in view of the ongoing high school exams, the Chief Minister said: “One of the first things I did after taking oath is to ask the police to be impartial in implementing the law. The police will not spare anybody who breaks the law.”

His third consecutive term as Chief Minister a record of sorts, Sarkar also appealed to the opposition Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) to consider it everybody’s government and sought their cooperation in putting up a combined fight for Tripura’s rights before the Centre.

“We may have political differences (with the Congress). But when it comes to the interest of overall development of Tripura, we must all stand up and join hands together to extract from New Delhi all that is due for the state,” he said.

At the same time, Sarkar didn’t hesitate in taking a swipe at the Congress, hinting that the tough fight it put up against the Left Front was on account of its frustration at not being able to have things its own way at the Centre. “But the people of Tripura have taught them a lesson,” he said.

Sarkar also outlined his government’s vision for building a “new Tripura” and said there was no place for people sitting idle in the present times. “Idle people have no business any longer.

We don’t want our people to sit idle and jobless. Nor do we want our people to go around with begging bowls. The

future is of people who work hard, and we are with them,” he said.

Speaking after Sarkar, Yechury too hit out at the Congress and said the Left would never allow the Congress-led UPA Government to do whatever it liked.
