COIMBATORE: In order to better utilise the excess water in north India rivers, the diversification to the needy southern states was much needed now, Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam said on Wednesday. For this, linking of Ganges and Cauvery was the only solution for better utilisation of excess water, Arumugam said participating in the third International Groundwater Conference here. This would also help in improving the ground water levels in the rivers of southern states, he said and requested the Centre for taking initiatives for the linking of Ganges and Cauvery.
Karunanidhi denies Jaya’s charge on water sharing
CHENNAI: Rejecting AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s claims that the final award offered less water to Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday asserted that the state would get more water following the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal’s final verdict. “Though I had said that I felt relieved by the final award, Jayalalithaa twisted my remarks as I felt happy,” the CM said in a statement here. Jayalalithaa had sought Karunanidhi’s resignation stating that the final award offered less water compared to the interim award of the tribunal.

COIMBATORE: The Centre has received 16 feasibility reports on inter-linking rivers in the peninsular part of the country, Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz said on Wednesday. The project report of Ken-Bethua linking in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh has been forwarded and action is expected very soon, the minister said. Another report on linking Kali Sind in MP and Parbathi in Rajasthan, which has to be agreed to by the two states, is being taken up, he said, adding that “since the rivers are a state subject, the process is very slow”.
