Police today arrested a relative of the general secretary of the state youth wing of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janashakti Party and a mukhiya in Vaishali district in connection with the kidnapping of two officials of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.

Saroj Shukla, sister-in-law of the youth LJP leader, Manoj Shukla, and mukhiya of Sahatha Panchayat D.N. Singh were arrested in separate raids, police said.

The whereabouts of the abducted NHPC officials remained unknown, today but their families were reported to have received a demand for a ransom of Rs 5 crore. The Beur jail was also raided today amid reports that inmates were running extortion rackets from inside the prison.

Meanwhile, the Patna High Court has ordered the Bihar government to transfer all jail superintendents in the state who have completed three years in their present posting. The order comes in the wake of a series of extortions, kidnappings and murders that have been allegedly planned by gangsters from within the jails.
