Benefit to IT firms willing to invest in the state
The state government has decided to provide government land on concessional rates to IT companies willing to invest in the state, Principal Secretary, Industry, S S Channi said while addressing newspersons this afternoon.
He said the government has chunks of land in Ropar, Mohali and Kapurthala, which would be offered at a discounted price. Till now, the scaling land prices, especially in the periphery of Chandigarh, had been a dissuading factor for the investors.
After meeting representatives of top IT firms in New Delhi recently, the state government officials will now head for Bangalore and Karnataka on November 6.
Infotech MD R K Verma said several software giants, including Infosys, Wipro and TCS, have evinced interest in Punjab. The state government has set a target of 600 acres of land in one year for IT, Verma said.
The Punjab government, which had recently accorded its approval for uninterrupted power supply to IT sector, will be doing this at no additional cost, Channi said. He added that dedicated power supply in several other states comes at an additional cost.
He said the state has an advantage since many of the tier-I IT cites have been clogged. Verma said in the past five years, software exports from Punjab have grown by 27 per cent. “The target export projection has been estimated at 52 per cent in the next 10 years, with an estimated employment potential of 1.9 lakh jobs,” he said.
The visiting delegation from Punjab will meet officials of Infosys, Wipro, Dell, Satyam and Mphasis. They will also be engaged in one-to-one meets for better understanding of the practices in the sector.
