MUMBAI, JANUARY 3: The first day of the `Lokshahi Din’ announced by the State Government a few days ago, where grievances of the people will be looked into by the Government on the first Monday of every month drew a lacklustre response, with no complaints received at the Mumbai Collector’s office.
The Lokshahi Din replaces the Janata Din which was held in the Collector’s office on December 28, 1999. Collector Debashish Chakrabarty told The Indian Express that one of the reasons for this lack of response was because the Janata Din was held a few days earlier
According to Chakrabarty, the nature of complaints handled by him and officers of various departments inlcude police, revenue, PWD etc and the complaints of these nature are very less compared to civic complaints that include encroachments, problems pertaining to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), co-operative housing societies, hawkers etc.
He is, however, hopeful that the response to the Lokshahi Din held on the next day would be much better and said that all the complaints which are dealt with in the Lokshahi Din are response-based and unless people come forward, it will not be discussed. Chakrabarty felt that in order to ensure the success of the Lokshahi Din, it is necessary to build the confidence of the people and urged members of the public to come forward immediately with their complaints.
Chakrabarty said that compared to Janata Din, Lokshahi Din is more people-oriented, citizen-friendly and more comprehensive. Elaborating on these advantages, Chakrabarty said that the new system is more interactive and aggrieved citizens are immediately informed about the status of their cases. He said that the grievances have to be redressed within one month and pointed out that the guardian minister of a particular district will be personally involved in each case.
