She had decided to run off with her boyfriend and get married. And she wanted to shop properly for the event. Problem was, she did not have the cash for it.

So she stole a family friend’s debit card and bought costly sarees for herself, jeans and suits for her boyfriend. The packet came to Rs 1.4 lakh.

And then, on August 7, she got caught. Her boyfriend Mohammad Inam (23), a milkman, was arrested on Saturday. The 22-year-old woman is a resident of a posh East of Kailash colony. Her mother works in an export house, her father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army.

The debit card belonged to her mother’s close friend Indira Hathi Ramani, a resident of Panchsheel Park.

Ramani was lucky. Her account had a balance of Rs 20 lakh. The woman and Inam had only spent a fraction of it before they were caught.

A graduate, the woman is an only child. Inam had been a regular visitor to their home for the last six months.

“She became close to Inam and both fell in love,” said a senior police officer, “they decided to get married but did not have money”.

The woman used to work in a private company but was currently unemployed. “She went to Ramani’s home with her mother and stole the card on July 31. Ramani had no reason to suspect anything as she was a frequent visitor,” the officer said. Between August 1 and 4, the couple shopped at a showroom in Lajpat Nagar.

They bought wedding garments — costly suits and sarees — and other clothes. By then, Ramani had filed a complaint about her debit card being stolen, the officer said.

“When we questioned the woman, she tried to implicate another boy. She concealed Inam’s identity as she was in love with him,” the officer said. “She did not make any confession till we found the number of the car they used. They had used the stolen debit card to buy petrol.”
