For the fifth time in four years, Mahindra United have a new coach. Derek Pereira, a former international who was Vasco’s coach for the past five years, is the man in the hot seat now.

And the 42-year-old is wasting no time. ‘‘I’ve begun training with the boys and have found them to be pretty good,’’ Pereira, who was considered to be the most accomplished central defenders of his time, said after signing an official contract with the Mahindra management on Monday. Though officials didn’t divulge the exact details of Pereira’s contract, Alan Durante, president Mahindra United, disclosed that Pereira has been signed for the current season with a possible extension next year.

The Mahindra management is confident that Pereira will help them win the elusive NFL title. ‘‘The country’s football fraternity thinks very highly of Derek (Pereira),’’ Henry Menezes said. ‘‘The fact that he’s young will be a bonus,’’ the former India custodian observed.
