A major fire was averted in Hemkunt Express when the Railway Police noticed kerosene sprinkled in one of the wagons and put sand in it, the police said today.

Someone sprinkled kerosene in wagon number 8 of the train which was noticed by GRP personnel yesterday evening, the police said, adding that the train was stopped at Kathua station, where the railway authorities put sand in the wagon. All the doors of the wagon were immediately closed and the authorities of Ferozepur railway division were informed.

At Chaki Bank railway station, the train was again stopped and the GRP team of Punjab cleaned the wagon. Official sources said Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP were jointly investigating the case. Hemkunt Express runs between Rishikesh railway station in Uttarakhand and Jammu Tawi station in Jammu and Kashmir. Sri Hemkunt Sahib is the shrine of Sikhs in Uttarakhand and the train also passes through the Hindu pilgrim centre of Haridwar.
