Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee called on Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Saturday and urged him to recommend dismissal of the Left Front Government on the basis of the Calcutta High Court’s judgment terming the March 14 police firing at Nandigram as ‘unconstitutional’.

Mamata, accompanied by advocate Kalyan Banerjee, a TMC leader, met the Governor at 4 pm. The meeting lasted 30 minutes. The TMC leaders gave the Governor a copy of the court’s order.

“A Government that has done something unconstitutional should be sacked according to the provisions of the Constitution,” Mamata told mediapersons after the meeting.

Mamata said her party had been highlighting for years now the Government’s “unconstitutional” acts and the CPI(M)’s misuse of the Government machinery, including the police to further its political objectives.

“I have appealed to the Governor to recommend imposition of Article 356,” Mamata said. Mamata said she had also told the Governor in detail about the “torture” borne by common people, including women, at Nandigram. “The CPI(M) is even targeting the relief camps and not allowing supplies into the camps,” Mamata said.

She said she had requested the Governor to ensure security for staying at relief camps. Even now, hundreds of people chased away by the CPI(M) cadres are taking shelter in the school at Nandigram, she said.

Mamata said the police are even now declining to play an impartial role. “The police force is instead helping the CPI(M) cadres in terrorising the locals,” she said. They are not registering the complaints filed by supporters of the Bhoomi Uchched Protirodh Committee (BUPC), the umbrella body against land acquisition that has the TMC’s support, she said.
