Police arrested a man named Mahendra in connection with the rape and murder of a woman in an Ajmer village a week ago that led to nearly a thousand men, including elders, being stripped by the local panchayat for clues to the crime.During preliminary investigation, Mahendra has reportedly admitted to raping and murdering Geeta Devi Rawat in Boraj village on September 9. A police team brought him here from Ajmer on Sunday, Circle Officer Shilpa Chaudhary (Ajmer North) said. Clues provided by the villagers who were stripped and paraded naked on the orders of Boraj village “sarpanch” led to Mahendra’s arrest Over 1,000 men, some of them even 90 years’ old, were stripped on September 10, a day after Rawat was killed, to look for bruises possibly sustained during a struggle with the assaulted woman. The panchayat allegedly gave the orders with the consent of the villagers.
