A 30-year-old man has been arrested here for murdering a prostitute with whom, he claims, he was in love. Pigram Kancha allegedly stabbed Kalpana (22) several times in the chest, stomach and abdomen before attempting suicide. The Nagpada police found him in a semi-conscious state after neighbours in the red-light district of Kamathipura reported suspicious noises on Tuesday.

‘‘Kancha and Kalpana were found lying nude in a pool of blood,’’ confirmed Assistant Police Inspector Nand Kumar Gopale.

Kancha was rushed to JJ Hospital, where he confessed to the murder and the attempted suicide.

The police also arrested Kalpana’s brothel keeper Mithu Saila (45) for immoral trafficking and rescued four girls from the building. The girls are now at a shelter in Chembur.

Meanwhile, investigations into the murder revealed that Kancha and Kalpana were both from Nepal. Police also found that Kancha, a cook in a Chinese restaurant in Sion, had been Kalpana’s regular customer for three years. ‘‘We have yet to question Kancha and determine the motive for the attack but it is assumed that he wanted Kalpana to leave the business and settle down with him,’’ said Senior Inspector Ashok Duraphe. Police have sent Kalpana’s body to JJ Hospital for post-mortem.
