MUMBAI, March 29: While congratulating the state government for its decision to implement the centralisation scheme for admission to first year junior college courses in Mumbai, the Forum for Fairness in Education has also demanded that the five per cent management quota in junior colleges be scrapped.

In a recent letter to state Education Minister Sudhir Joshi, forum secretary Suryakant Gaglani urged the government to delete the quota to prevent its misuse by college managements. The forum has also quoted several high court and Supreme Court cases that discourage management quotas in colleges.

The state

government’s decision to implement the centralisation scheme from the forthcoming academic year was announced in the Legislative Assembly by Joshi last week. The scheme, which aims to streamline the admissions, will require candidates who have passed the SSC examination to fill in a standardised form, indicating colleges of their choice in order of preference. Admission will be granted on the basis ofmerit and prevailing caste reservations. In a press statement, Gaglani has also said: “It appears that the state has buckled under pressure from the management lobby and allowed this quota of five per cent which is being grossly misused either by sale of such seats or by distributing them among influential persons.”

College principals, however, are reluctant to scrap the quota, which they say had been scheduled several years ago.
