MUMBAI, DEC 6: Marshelene Fernandes of St Agnes High School set a new meet record in the shot put (girls under-14) with a heave of 8.07 metres in the XXII Bombay YMCA Open State-level annual athletic meet at the University Pavilion today.

Men: 5000m: 1. Sanjeev Nair 14:55.9 sec (NMR), 2. Shatrunghana Patil (OSPTR), 3. Datta Tayde (Road Runner). Javelin: 1. Sunil Patil (AVS Kreeda Mandal) 47.54 m; 2. OPK Joshua (UBI), 3. SA Jitekar (Lubrisol). 110 hurdles: 1. Yogesh Bhangale (TMAP) 16.8; 2. Harish Poojari (TMG), 3. Kiorash Busorgi (BBYA).

Bosco’s, Paul’s tops

Don Bosco, Matunga, defeated St Xavier’s, Fort, 60-27 to bag the Sir Ratan Tata Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in the boys under-16 Inter-School basketball tournament at the MSSA Castrol court, Azad maidan, today.

In the girls under-16 section final, St Paul’s Convent, Dadar, claimed the M H Ghadiyali Cup when they beat Mary Immaculate, Borivli, 33-22.

Results: Boys under-16 (final): Don Bosco 60 (Kenneth Parihad 28, Rohan Kumar 12, Mihir Kothari 8) bt St Xavier’s 29 (Hsing Liang 17). Third Place: Anjuman Islam, Urdu, 38 (Nazim Khan 14, Farhan Shaikh 8, Nazim Khan 8) bt St Stanislaus 36 (Roger Fernandes 13, Vernet Lasrado 8, Aaron Fernandes 7, Nigel Pinto 6).

Girls under-16 (final): St Paul’s 33 (Pravina Thokal 15, Ashwini Kate 8, Shazia Shaikh 8) bt Mary Immaculate, Borivli, 22 (Sonia Sequeira 13). Third place: Fatima, Ghatkopar failed to turn up for their match against Canossa’s, Andheri.

W Rly retain title

Last year’s winners, Western Railway retained their title when they defeated Central Railway 41-29 in the women’s final of the X Bombay YMCA open Basketball Tournament here at YMCA, Ghatkopar.

At the half-time, the WR were leading 25-20. For Western, Deepali Karmarkar (15) and Meena Singh (13) were the leading scorers. For the losers, Meena Pandey (10) and Anamma Thomas (7).

In the men’s final Shivaji Nagar, Nagpur defeated TMG 72-69. At half-time the score was 37-37. For the Nagpur team, Satish Warrier (20), Shatrunga Gokhale (15), Pankaj Deshmukh (11) were the main scorers.

For TMG Mahesh Naidu (24), Shibu Garge (12) and Clarence Menezes (15) reduced the margin.

Big win for Packers

Bandra Packers routed Hotel Centaur 6-0 in the MDFA-conducted Harwood football league at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, today.

Clarie Remedios, Savio Rodrigues, Renzie Kallicharan, Loius Misquita, Ganesh Ramugade and Blaize Vesgoakar scored in that order for Packers.
