Pace bowler Chris Martin destroyed Sri Lanka’s top order to put New Zealand in a strong position on the opening day of the second Test.

Martin finished with career-best figures of six for 54 as the tourists collapsed to 211 all out at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

New Zealand wiped 52 runs off the deficit without loss before bad light ended play early.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 211 (T Samaraweera 73, U Chandana 42; Martin 6/54, Astle 3/35). vs NZ: 52/0.
