The Supreme Court today issued notices to UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and others on a petition filed by a BSP leader challenging the decisions of the Allahabad High Court to quash certain charges against them in the case pertaining to alleged assault on Mayawati and her partymen in the state guest house in Lucknow in 1995.

A bench comprising Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice B.N. Srikrishna also issued notices to the state government and SP leaders Azam Khan, Mulayam’s brother Shiv Pal Singh Yadav, Masood Ahmad, Beni Prasad Verma, Dhani Ram Verma and six others.

Two petitions were filed through advocate Shail Dwivedi by former BSP minister in the state government Barkhuram Verma who has challenged two decisions of the high court. In one, the hc had quashed the charge against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, where it was alleged that BSP MLAs were offered Rs 50 lakh along with ministerial berths to defect from the party and support Yadav as CM.

In the other, the petitioner challenged the HC’s decision to quash the charge against the accused under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
