Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is back on the suspension spree of ‘‘non-performing’’ IAS and IPS officials. She suspended SSP of Basti district Anoop Agarwal, pulled up DM B.B. Srivastav and transferred range DIG R.S. Tripathi today.

‘‘In future the punishment to non-performing officials will not be limited to the SPs and DMs but senior people will also face the action,’’ the Chief Minister warned while holding a review meeting in Basti district. This was the first review meeting of the CM and all 17 divisions of the state will be reviewed. In her earlier two stints, Mayawati had become a terror among officials for announcing spot action against personnel following review meetings.

As many as 20 Congress MLAs from the state reached Delhi today and held a two-and-a-half-hour-long session with party president Sonia Gandhi this evening.

‘‘We are united’’ was the MLAs’ message as they emerged out of the meeting at Sonia’s residence, led by state CLP leader Pramod Tiwari. Motilal Vora, AICC general-secretary in-charge of UP was also present at the meeting. (ENS)

This time, she has given a deadline to all the SPs in the state to bring down the crime rate in their respective districts by 50 pc within two months. ‘‘I will personally review the situation in all the divisions every month,’’ she said. Directing Chief Secretary D.S. Bagga to convene a monthly meeting with senior officials of all divisions, the CM promised to give plum posts to those who show improvement within the deadline. She gave a free hand to officials to transfer SHOs without caste considerations.
