They don’t fit the typical profile of a terrorist—a madarsa product brainwashed by Pakistan. The Indian Express went through police records, including confessional statements, and found that ‘‘revenge for the Gujarat riots’’ has been cited as a key provocation by many of the 27 suspects arrested this year for the six bombings in Mumbai since December 2002. And unlike the Surat artisan, arrested for Black Monday, who complained of being “victimised” after the Gujarat riots, many have professional college degrees: from an MD in forensics to a Master’s in Computer science. A sample:

Atif Nasir Mulla, 26 A graduate of the elite Wilson College, Mumbai, and captain of its cricket team. Later an MBA from Pune University who became a product manager with a multinational and was arrested during a job interview. Saquib Abdul Hamid Nachen, 41 A commerce graduate from the timber-trading prosperous village of Borivli, 140 km from Mumbai, he trained in Pakistan and brought back arms in the early 1990s. Arrested by the CBI in 1992, spent most of the decade in prison. Suspected kingpin of four bombings since December 2001. Detained under POTA.
Mohammed Iqbal Wani alias Mustaq, 38 Master in Computer Science from Srinagar in Kashmir. Was killed in an operation after he was trapped with Lashkar-e-Toiba southern area commander Abu Sultan at Goregoan on March 29. Wani imparted training in computer technology before joining hands with Sultan.
