CHENNAI, JAN 10: The talks between Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) (J) on seat-sharing for Lok Sabha elections, were inconclusive on Friday evening, as the MDMK continued to insist on allocation of the second highest number of seats to the front.

An MDMK team led by its presidium chairman L Ganesan, visited AIADMK (J) headquarters on Friday and held discussions with leaders of the latter including presidium chairman V R Nedunchezhian. This was the second round of talks on seat-sharing between the two parties.

The MDMK is understood to have maintained its position on allocation of seats as lesser allotment might not satisfy its leaders and cadres. The party is understood to have referred to specific constituencies where it rated the party’s prospects of victory as bright.

However, the AIADMK (J) leadership had reportedly pointed out that some of the allies had also sought the same seats and therefore a decision on the MDMK demand could be taken only after talks with them. According to reliable sources, MDMK has been offered five seats on par with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).

It is learnt that the MDMK district secretaries have urged the leadership to ensure that it is allocated more seats.

The party’s call for applications seeking tickets for all the 40 seats including the one in Pondicherry is interpreted by some party circles as indicating its preparedness to go it alone in the elections, if the alliance broke down on seat-sharing formula.

The PMK, another ally of the AIADMK (J), may like to get about five seats, but it does not have well-known figures to field except the party’s general secretary Dalit Ezhilmalai.

The AIADMK (J) was scheduled to hold discussions with the BJP team as well on Friday but this has been postponed to Saturday in view of the meeting with MDMK leaders.

Sources said the seat-sharing formula would be finalised only after general secretaries of both the parties J Jayalalitha and V Gopalsamy met.
