With Indo-Pak relations looking up, forty-year-old Kundan Guria’s family can hope to see him again after five years. Guria has been languishing in Lahore jail for mistakenly straying into Pakistan’s territory. Lack of procedural knowledge and money to get him released has forced his family to hope that Pakistan’s regime releases him as a mark of friendship.

While Guria sent two letters from Lahore, he did not mention about his being in a Pakistani jail. It was only from the third letter, written on July 1, 2003, addressed to his father-in-law Ghuran Singh, that the family came to know about Guria’s new address.

Birmitrapur police sources could not recollect having registered any missing case and feigned ignorance about any such letter from the missing person from Pakistan.

Sources revealed that Guria, along with three others, went to Punjab through local middleman Sukru Lakra in search of a job. Bhuta Lakra, who returned after six months, said Guria went missing two days after he joined work. Since then, no one in the family knew about his whereabouts.
