MUMBAI, JANUARY 25: An attacking unbeaten knock of 83 by bespectacled opener Meghna Marathe was instrumental in St Columba’s facile 127-run win over Mount Mary’s in the five-team round-robin MSSA-Colgate Inter-School girls cricket league for the Manoramabai Apte Trophy at the MSSA Schools Sports Centre, Azad Maidan, today.

This was Columba’s second win. They have lost one game, to CD Barfiwala.St Columba, after winning the toss, elected to bat. Openers Meghna and Anuja Devlekar gave them a solid start by putting on 64 runs in just 8.3 overs before Anuja was run-out after facing 23 balls. Her contribution was zero.Meghna had the distinction of scoring the first half century of the competition. Her 83 (80 balls, 14×4) helped her side post 177 for 5 in the stipulated 25 overs. The other top scorer was Mr Extras with 61 (54 wides, 7 byes).

In reply, Mount Mary’s were dismissed for 50 in 15.4 overs. Mr Extras’ was the top run-getter with 43, while opener Jinal Gundecha was second highest with six runs. Asmany as nine batswomen failed to open their account. Priyanka Sabde and Chaitra Jadhav captured three wickets each.

Easy for Rajput XI

Rajput XI trounced Marinagar 4-0 in the BHA First Division hockey league, sponsored by Punjab National Bank, at the Khalsa College ground, Matunga, today.

Ace striker Gavin Vandrine (2), Agnelo Noronho and Sheldon Buthello were the scorers for Rajput. In Pool A (III Div), IIT Mumbai beat Vasai Eskimos B 3-0. Sachin Devang, G Reddy and D Mishra were the scorers. There will be no game on Republic Day.

St Andrew’s held

Thakur College held St Andrew’s 1-1 in the Inter-College football tornnament, organised by the Goan Sports Association, at the Cross Maidan, today.

Amar Jeevani scored for Thakur and Arveen Thakur did likewise for Andrew’s. Siddharthbeat Ruparel 3-0. Sydney Mascarenhas (2) and Dominic D’Souza scored. MVLU beat Srinivas 3-0. The scorers were R Percy, Sagar and Ryan Quadros. There is no match on Repuublic Day.

Kuriakose scores

A Kuriakose (Ker) beat Kanhyalal (Del) 15-5, 15-1 in the 45+ men’s singles first round of the National Veterans badminton tournament, organised by Bombay Gymkhana & Badminon 45, sponsored by G D Somani Memorial Trust, at the Bombay Gymkhana, today.

Jogesh claims gold

Jogesh Sharma (Mumbai) defeated Arun (Rohtak) in the final bout of the below 86kg weight category to win the gold medal at the All-India University judo tournament at Chandigarh.

Just a week ago, Arun had defeated Jogesh in the first-round of the Senior Nationals at Bangalore.

Jogeshthrew Arun in De Ashi Harai, a foot sweep, to take lead of half point, and then struck once again in Tai O Toshi, body drop throw, to make it a full point.
