After preparing a comprehensive Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) map of Delhi, the Science and Technology Ministry on Tuesday unveiled plans for similar mapping of other cities and commercial exploitation of GIS technology. Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said the aim was to carry out GIS mapping of about 400 towns across the country in the next five years. “GIS technology is going to be bigger than the IT revolution,” he said. GIS technology involves 3-D images taken by high-range cameras installed at strategic locations across the city. The cameras beam real-time footage to a central monitoring room where the data can be integrated, edited and analysed.
