After proving himself as a reliable batsman for Pakistan, Misbah-ul-Haq has emerged as a strong contender for the job of vice-captain as the PCB has decided to appoint a new man. A Pakistan Cricket Board official said the decision on the new vice-captain would be taken at its governing body meeting, to be held on January 15.

“We are looking at two or three candidates to appoint the vice-captain, at least till the end of the year for the sake of continuity in the team,” the official said. Sources said the strongest candidate for the job is Misbah, who had a terrific tour of India. “Misbah is a strong candidate but no final decision has been made as yet,” the source said.

Younis Khan was the vice-captain of the team on the Indian tour after the Board axed opener Salman Butt from the post. Pacer Mohammad Asif was also appointed vice-captain earlier this year and was then replaced after just one event. The Board official said Younis, who led the team in the absence of injured Shoaib Malik, has not been ruled out as a candidate even though he has now expressed his willingness to lead the team.

Former players have criticised the Board for turning the vice-captain’s post into a musical chair competition with three appointments in less than a year. “It would be best to continue with Younis if he is willing. It would be better not to burden Misbah or any other player,” former captain Javed Miandad said.
