Taking note of a plea over MNS threat to target shopowners who do not put up Marathi signboards, the Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the state home department to give a statement assuring maintenance of law and order in the city.

Hearing a petition filed by a retailers’ federation, the court asked the home department to give a statement before it by 3 pm on Thursday.

The government should also assure that preventive action will be taken in case of any untoward incident, the court said.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray had on Wednesday warned shopowners to face the wrath of his men if they fail to put up signboards in Marathi by Thursday.

The Maharashtra Government had, in turn, warned that anyone taking law into his hands would be dealt with sternly.
