Models charmed but chokra stole the show

PANCHKULA, MARCH 21: It was meant to be a celebration bash and it had all the ingredients of one, what with people joining in with full gusto and designs displayed on the ramp adding colour. Though the girls led by the country’s leading names, Shweta Menon and Shefali Talwar, mesmerised the crowd with their poise and grace, it was definitely the “chokra” of the Indi-pop scene, Piyush Soni, who stole the show.

The evening on the lawns of Hotel Pallavi was arranged by choreographer Jeet Brar to celebrate his first decade in fashion world. And since he has always been associated with the National Institute of Fashion Design, his landmark being the mega event he choreographed for their Calcutta centre, his party garbs were designed by the students of the Chandigarh chapter of the institute. And to pep up the spirits in between the rounds, the dancers from the MTV group, “Dynamite”, jived and made many feet tap.

The show, compered by the omnipresent Pallav Bose, began an hour behind schedule but when it did, it was one racy, breathless presentation with music, dance and catwalk in flow. Clad in exquisite greys, the models ushered in the collections that were to follow. There was a riot of colours designed by the first year students of NIFD and the plains with designer “cholis” as the models sashayed to the track, “O Meri Jaane Jaa, Aankhon Se Door Na Ho..”. This literally became true when the girls brought in the collections from Ram Chander and Sons (RCS). This round which featured gorgeous sarees had many women of the audience starry-eyed.

It was a repeat case with the Satya Paul designs in black and white. No doubt it was the senior duo, Shweta and Shefali, who actually won the accolades in the rounds. Whether Indian traditional or Western formal, they looked perfect in all.

But the “chokra” beat them; so what if he was dressed in just plain jeans, shirt and an ordinary jacket. He got many “chokras” from among the audience, young and old, obese and jerry-built, to dance on the ramp.

Piyush, who had hit the music scene with his album “Chokra” and who is a one-man-army being the writer-composer-director-all rolled into one, got into the crowd psyche in no time. And by the time he finished his “Teri Chadti Jawani”, that too an encore, he was almost like one of the family of the vast young crowd there. For a change, the boys, too, got their fair share this time, thanks to this self-made “chokra”.
