Mohun Bagan trounce Tollygunge Shkvirin emerges top scorer

Calcutta, March 27: Calcutta giant Mohun Bagan on Sunday ended their league engagement with a thumping 4-0 victory over Tollygunge Agragami to emerge champions of the millennium’s first National Football League at Salt Lake Stadium here.

A corner kick by Noel Wilson in the 11th minute was defected to Tondo and then to Noushad, who struck a fine goal by beating East Bengal custodian Prasanta Dora.

But the euphoria was short-lived as visitors scored the equaliser within two minutes, Emmanuel effectively converting a corner kick, beating goalkeeper Sunday Seah hands down.

The winning goal was scored by Carlton Chapman in the 65th. Saji Joy, who was guarding the net in the absence of the forward playing Sunday Seah, was completely defeated in the commotion which followed during the corner kick taken by Renedy Singh. Chapman, who took stock of the situation, struck home beating defender Farooq Hyder.
